The Christchurch School (CCS) sailing team raced to a second-place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association (MASSA) Team Racing Championship at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., this month.

This finish qualified the CCS team for the 2022 Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) Baker Team Racing National Championship to be presented at Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook, Texas, May 21-22.

Christchurch has remained undefeated against its in-state rivals in the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association (VISA) this spring, reported CCS Communications Associate Jennifer Homer.

Christchurch hosted the MASSA Mallory Qualifier May 14-15. Eighteen of the top teams from the Mid-Atlantic region traveled to Christchurch to race for four spots to attend the ISSA Mallory Doublehanded Fleet Racing National Championship.

The Christchurch sailing team is coached by Waterfront and Sailing Director Kieran O’Connell.

The Clyde V. Kelly IV Sailing Pavilion at the school’s waterfront is home to the sailing team and the school’s fleet, which includes 30 International 420 Class dinghies and the Jack Dozier ’65 Fleet of 21 ZIM FJs. The team launches directly onto the Rappahannock River and sails throughout the fall and spring, said Homer.

The sailing program offers three levels of instruction, varsity, junior varsity and learn-to-sail.
