Deltaville Ballpark reps seek historic Middlesex baseball photos, uniforms

This photograph of the 1961 Middlesex Little League champions, the Syringa team, was recently discovered. It shows, front, from left, Danny Whitaker, Paul Figg; middle, same order, Sonny Revere, Bunky Revere, Carl Saunders, Wayne Matthews, Harry Smith, James Allen Whitaker, Richard Stevens, Johnny Lucas, Walter Revere; and back, Coach Phil Armistead. (Sentinel file photo) Ukulele-strumming Brett Cahoon, left, and Chelsea Champ supply the vocals for Good Shot Judy as the 12-member Williamsburg-based “Vegas-style” band performs for a packed audience at Deltaville Maritime Museum’s waterfront park last summer. The band is slated to perform 7-10 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Deltaville Ballpark as part of the ballpark’s 75th anniversary concert fundraiser. Food and beverages will be available. Then, at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 21, there will be an old-timers game followed by the Deltaville Deltas taking on the Tappahannock Tides at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available in advance at Hurd’s Hardware, J&W Seafood, Nauti Nell’s store, and through the Deltaville Deltas website. Some will also be available at the gate. (Photo by Don Richeson)

Deltaville Ballpark is spearheading an effort to collect copies of photographs for all periods of baseball in Middlesex County.

As players from the early and mid-20th century are disappearing from the community, Middlesex residents’ help is needed to preserve the priceless history of baseball in Middlesex to ensure the stories are never forgotten. The ballpark is seeking to collect information on any teams that played in Middlesex, including the Deltaville, Syringa, Urbanna, and Church View youth teams, Middlesex High School teams, American Legion, Deltaville Deltas, Middlesex Blue Sox, Middle Peninsula Mariners, and any other organized baseball teams from Middlesex from any point in history. The photographs will be available online, and many may be reproduced for a future historical display at Deltaville ballpark.

The ballpark is also interested in stories, recollections, and general history of many of these past teams that no longer exist.

If you have old photographs, newspapers, uniforms, or even film, email deltavilleballpark@deltavilleva.com, and ballpark reps can arrange to have digital scans made and promptly returned to you.
