Robert “Bobby” Taylor Dickerson, 81, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, Sept. 16 with his family by his side.
He was born July 22, 1940 and he married the love of his life Nov. 22, 1961.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of more than 59 years, Evelyn Morris Dickerson; his daughters, Edith Atkinson (T.C.), Susan Fellin (Shawn), Rita Taylor (Todd), and Angel Brown (Chris); 12 grandchildren, Taylor Fisher, Caroline Fisher Smith (Ryan), Stephen Atkinson, Sarah Atkinson, Shawn Robert Fellin, Scott Fellin, Sarah Fellin, Rachel Taylor, Gabby Taylor, Ashby Taylor, Megan Burnett (Josh) and Mercede Mason (Wyatt); three great-grandchildren, Bailey and Adalynn Burnett, Parker Mason; a sister, Frances Reed Hodges; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A true family man through and through, if he wasn’t working, he was spending time with his family. He enjoyed countless hours with them and many friends aboard their family Four Winns boat. A hard worker his whole life, he began his meat cutting career under the guidance of Boyd Loving at Park Place Market in high school, worked 25 years for A & P until owning his own business, The Green Front Grocery & Deli. After closing The Green Front in 1991, he worked for numerous grocery stores in the area, most recently working at Urbanna Market on Thursdays each week, training new meat cutters or filling in whenever they needed him. In addition, he also delivered The Rivah Visitor’s Guide magazines for the Southside Sentinel (where he was once featured on the cover pulling his daughter Angel, nephew Garry and his son John all at once on water skis behind the Four Winns). He loved cutting grass for several neighbors and friends. He enjoyed the many friends and customers he met over the years as a meat cutter (he never met a stranger) and he loved attending the sports games at Middlesex High School, being at the pool, spending time outdoors and catching afternoon snoozes with his dog, Skipper.
He had a gift for encouraging and mentoring – he was always willing to help when he saw a need. A man of strong character, he was generous, loving, thoughtful and considerate. He loved the Lord and enjoyed sharing encouragement and his faith with others. His heart’s message would be to anyone, “Give your heart and life to the Lord. Live for Him. It’s the single most important and best decision you will ever make in this lifetime.”
He is treasured, cherished, and will be greatly missed.
