Bushey: Move sheriff’s HQ to Cooks Corner

Sheriff David Bushey asked Middlesex County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 7 to consider moving the county sheriff’s department offices from Saluda across the street from the courthouse to the 40-year-old Lewis B. Puller Vocational Center building at Cooks Corner.

The Puller building was built in 1980 with a $500,000 federal grant to house the Lewis B. Puller Vocational Center. It is now, however, vacant, said Bushey.

He said that the current sheriff’s department headquarters (HQ) in Saluda has inadequate space for the business of running the department and not enough room for expansion of parking outside of the building.

The sheriff said a new sheriff’s department building at Saluda could cost taxpayers about $5 million. “This building can be refurbished for a lot less and we are thinking about the taxpayers,” said Bushey.

Bushey said that the new courthouse was designed to have a courtroom in the basement and that it is still in the plans. The sheriff predicts the basement, now being used for storage, will have to be refurbished into a courtroom in the next six years…
