Middlesex County water system clears hurdle

Work on $15 million project may start as soon as this fall

Bringing drinking water to central and eastern Middlesex County took a major step this week when the Middlesex Water Authority (MWA) received clearance to seek construction bids.

On Monday, the MWA got approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the financing agency, to request bids for the $15 million-plus water project that will pump water from near Urbanna to Topping and Deltaville.

“This has been a significant milestone and goal of our team for a long time!” said MWA Chairman Greg Chambers.

The bid documents will get posted to the state site this week and bids will be opened and reviewed by late August, he explained.

The 40-mile-long water project is being bid in six phases. Four phases are just pipelines, and two phases are pump stations — one at the Rosegill wells and the other behind Deltaville Market. “We bid the project in this manner to insure the fastest deployment…
