County IT guru receives salutes

During the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors is using virtual Zoom technology for conducting public meetings to accommodate social distancing and citizen participation.

At the board’s June 2 meeting, County Administrator Matt Walker commended IT Director Kevin Gentry for his efforts in making the Zoom technology system work so well for the county. (IT stands for Information Technology.)

In a report to supervisors at the meeting, Gentry said that around the first of March (2020) county staff members realized the potential of the novel coronavirus to disrupt county business.

“We had to procure refurbished laptops to enable the office workers to be able to telework,” he said. “The firewall had recently been upgraded and the telework deployment has gone very smoothly.”

Gentry said the Zoom application for conducting virtual meetings has proven to be “very successful” allowing supervisors and other county departments to conduct public business…
