The Heritage Committee needs old St. Clare Walker High School items

The Heritage Committee was formed by the Middlesex Foundation, a non-profit corporation formed in 2017 to preserve the history of St. Clare Walker High School. The Middlesex County Economic Development Authority and the Rappahannock Oyster Company, the potential developer that operates Merroir in Topping, are interested in restoring the former St. Clare Walker High School agriculture and vocational building at Cooks Corner and converting it into a restaurant and a micro-brewery.

The Heritage Committee needs your help. The committee is in the process of collecting photographs, newspaper articles or clippings and memorabilia reflective of the historic life of St. Clare Walker High School, beginning with its renaming from Middlesex Training School in 1948 to its closing in 1969.

“Please search through your attics, basements, closets and barns for those precious items that you saved to remember you or a loved one’s high school experiences,” said a Heritage Committee member. “We must tell and display the Heritage of St. Clare Walker High School.”

Please tell the committee of the results of your search by responding to Henry Easton by email (heaston2@hughes.net), by mail (876 Burch’s Mill Road, Urbanna, VA 23175) or by telephone (804-758-5111).

You may also contact Hallie Holmes at hallieholmes@outlook.com; Box 492, Braxton Corr Road, Saluda, VA 23149; and 804-854-5906.

“Let’s preserve the legacy of St. Clare Walker High School together!” said Holmes.

There will be an oral history done as well for those who want to participate.

“All materials will be returned in its original matter,” said Holmes. “A written release form will also be provided whenever necessary. Thank you for your cooperation in this endeavor.”
