Supervisors ask for more info on what special designation for river entails

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors tabled action on Sept. 1 to support a study of the Rappahannock River from the Route 3 bridge at Ferry Farm in Fredericksburg to the mouth of the river at Deltaville for Virginia’s Scenic Rivers status.

Supervisors asked County Attorney Heather Lewis to review Virginia code sections on “power and authority” pertaining to Scenic Rivers designation and to report back to the board in October.

Virginia’s Department of Conservation Resources (DCR) administers the Scenic Rivers Program, a program DCR says is designed to identify, designate and help protect rivers and streams that possess outstanding scenic, recreational, historic and natural characteristics of statewide significance for future generations.

“Why are we (ECCA) promoting the scenic designation of this large stretch of the river? We have no personal financial stake in any of this. Our message comes from the heart, prompted by our realization that the river is one of the greatest assets, if not the greatest asset, our counties have,” said Wellford.
