This year’s Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity baseball team is a young squad with a new head coach. The Chargers, however, showed some baseball experience Friday, April 1, by holding off the Nandua Warriors with a 1-0 win.
Patrick Larson provided the arm on the mound as Larson shut out the Warriors and pitched a complete game. He gave up only three hits and struck out eight batters.
“This is a big win for us,” said new Head Coach John Robins. “It is our first win and shows us what we can do as a team. It has been a slow start for us but when Tidewater District play starts after spring break (on April 12) we should be very competitive.”
Middlesex (1-4, 0-0) this season has lost to strong and experienced teams as Northumberland beat MHS twice with 10-0 scores in both games. MHS also lost to Rappahannock 12-2 and to Lancaster, 2-0. All of the games were non-conference games.
The Chargers have only two seniors on the team as Jarrett Williams and Thomas Wilson are playing their final year for MHS. The rest of the team is mostly composed of rising junior varsity players.
In the game against Nandua on Friday, April 1, the only run in the contest came in the sixth inning when Williams drove in Riley Dean with a double. Cameron Byers and Kaden Hunley had two hits apiece and Hudson McMinn contributed a single. Peyton Lambert stole a base for the Chargers.
Middlesex will resume play after spring break. The Chargers will host Tidewater District foe the West Point Pointers on Tuesday, April 12. The game starts at 5 p.m.
