The ever-evolving Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park encourage all to mark their August calendars as the museum announces its events schedule and attractions for August.
New exhibits, both inside and outside the museum, are being updated as volunteers and staff work to further its mission as an archive “living history” museum and community resource. The nature park is always changing as our volunteers prune, weed and plant.
The August events kick off as the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park will host its Holly Point Market. August 24 will be a Saturday of shopping, as well as live music, exhibits, model trains, and nature trails at the market from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Over 30 vendors will line the paths and Waterfront Park.
“F.D. Crockett” will be back at the dock for tours. The Boat Shop volunteers, led by director John England, will man the Crockett as well as the new Boat Shop where “Hull 102” is moving toward completion.
“Explorer” is still in Quebec filming the National Geographic series “Barkskins.”
Captain Pete Cardozo and the Farinholt Brothers’ restored deadrise the “Only Son” will be ready on the Pierwalk on Mill Creek with his wonderful scenic workboat cruises on both Mill and Jackson creeks. Only Son, a round-sterned Deltaville Deadrise, was built on Lover’s Lane. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity. The cruises start around 10 a.m.
There will be lots of shopping with food, arts, crafts, cheeses, honey, peanuts, bread, Greek pastries, live music in the Pavilion, walking the park and trails, eating great food, lounging around, and a concert in the evening. It’s the Holly Point Market from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and Groovin’ in the Park from 5-8 p.m.
The Rappahannock Railroaders model train club will be operating the museum’s own large gauge trains in the Children’s Garden, weather permitting.
The museum will open an hour early with donation-only admission at 9 a.m. for the market. The museum features its new maritime and history exhibits. There are significant upgrades to the “Boat Builders Shop.” Enjoy the new Tidewater Oyster Growers Exhibit. There are all kinds of new gifts and wearable items in the gift shop. Grab one of our new bumper stickers for your car.
There will be spacious and convenient parking for all events. Golf carts will on hand during the market and Groovin’ for the mobility restricted.
Also on August 24, the reggae band “Stuck on a Name” (SOAN) takes the Waterfront Stage from 6-8 p.m. for the Groovin’ in the Park concert. SOAN takes you to the islands with the best reggae around.
Local singer/songwriter Clayton Neal, formerly with “Jumbo Lump Daddy and the Backfin Boys,” opens at 5 p.m. Gates open at 4 p.m.
On Labor Day Saturday, August 31, from 5-8 p.m. will be the museum’s Bonus Groovin’ featuring the annual appearance of locally-connected Josh Walker and his trio playing and Sharon Rae North singing your favorite old standards. All your favorite Sinatra and Bennett tunes and more.
The unpredictable “Toby Gillie Duo” will open for Josh at 5 p.m. You never know what will come round on Toby’s horn?
Groovin’ in the Park is the Museum and Park’s casual “bring your own lawn chair, cooler, and picnic” concert series held in its Waterfront Park. Drivers may use the loop road to drop off passengers and chairs. Some chairs and tables are available in the Gary Waterfront Pavilion and Waterfront Park on a first-come, first-served basis. Extra metal folding chairs are also on hand if you can’t bring yours. Tasty hot food, cold beverages, fruit smoothies, and swine skins will be available next to the Tea House.
Tickets for Groovin’ are $10 in advance and $15 after 4 p.m. on Saturday. Children under 12 are admitted free.
