An unloaded gun was discovered in a locked compartment in a vehicle in the Middlesex High School (MHS) parking lot on Tuesday, reported Dr. Tracy Seitz, superintendent of Middlesex County Public Schools in an email to students’ parents. No ammunition was found and there were no reports of threat or harm, her email stated.
A juvenile was taken into police custody Tuesday and transported to Merrimac Juvenile Detention Center in Williamsburg, reported Maj. M.E. Sampson of the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office. The 17-year-old male student has been charged with possession of a firearm on school property, and underage possession of a hand gun, said Maj. Sampson.
School administrators at MHS had received a report of a weapon in a vehicle, stated Seitz in her email. “Working with the school resource officer, information was collected and a search was conducted of the identified vehicle immediately,” Seitz’s email stated. “Safety is our number one priority in all of our schools. While we have many protocols in place for our students’ and staff’s protection, we also rely on our students being aware of their surroundings and reporting anything suspicious to administration.”
