The Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Association (TOGA) will deliver a free training seminar, which is entitled “OYS-101: Basic Oyster Gardening,” and which covers how to grow oysters, from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13 at the Northumberland Public Library, 7204 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.

Virginia waterfront residents may legally grow oysters in their creek or river, even if the body of water is contaminated, said Dr. Siciliano. Oysters are natural filter feeders and can help restore the Chesapeake Bay, its rivers and creeks.

Waterfront property owners will learn how to grow oysters from their piers or shore for non-commercial purposes, with a free shellfish growing permit from the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC), reported TOGA Master Oyster Gardener Dr. Richard J. Siciliano.

To sign up for the class, email Dr. Siciliano at rjsiciliano@ yahoo.com, or call or text him at 240-270-1439.
