Missing MC woman’s body found

Death likely accidental

The search for a Middlesex County woman that had been missing since Jan. 12, came to a sad conclusion when the body of Buffy Marie Moore was found in LaGrange Creek about 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24, reported Major M.E. Sampson of the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

Buffy Marie Moore

According to Maj. Sampson, officers of the Virginia Marine Police found Moore, 53, on the north shore of LaGrange Creek about 1,000 yards from Remlik Marina, which was the last place she had been seen on Jan. 12.

She was transported to the Virginia Medical Examiners office in Richmond for an autopsy, which is standard procedure for most unattended deaths, said Maj. Sampson.

Moore had been at the marina with friends before she went missing. A friend reported her missing  the morning of Jan. 13.

“The investigation has not revealed anything to indicate her death was anything other than accidental,” said Maj. Sampson this week.

Eleven days

“This has been an ongoing search since she disappeared,” said Maj. Sampson. “The Virginia Marine Police patrolled LaGrange Creek regularly looking for her.”

LaGrange Creek is located west of Urbanna. The marina is a little more than a mile from the Rappahannock River.

Law enforcement agencies had searched under the water around the marina on Jan. 13, shortly after she was reported missing, but did not find her, Maj. Sampson reported earlier.

Officers from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) had checked the area with sonar, which had indicated something unusual under water.

The Chesapeake Fire and Rescue was called and deployed a remotely operated underwater vehicle with camera and searched the marina area.  Nothing was found.

The search continued on Tuesday, Jan. 23, when Virginia Marine Police searched using an airplane. A patrol boat found her on Wednesday.

The Virginia Marine Police was assisted by detectives of the MCSO, the Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad, and a  citizen in recovering Moore’s body, said Maj. Sampson.
