Council OKs a $1.1 million town pool; but how to pay for it?

Taber principal considered key

The Urbanna Town Council took a big step last week towards building a new town community swimming pool. With financing still in question, council voted unanimously at its Oct. 13 meeting to authorize the town staff to enter a pool construction contract.

Councilor Bill Goldsmith, who serves as chairman of the pool committee, said the town needs to be able to use the Taber Fund in some way for the financing. “If we don’t use that in some way, we’re not going to be able to build this pool,” said Goldsmith. “We don’t have the cash flow to cover the whole thing.”

There is a possibility of getting a reimbursement grant once the project is ready to be built. “But we can’t count on that,” Goldsmith said.

A petition was submitted to the Middlesex Circuit Court in August seeking a judge’s permission to withdraw $500,000 of the “principal” from the Taber Fund. The case has not been heard…
