A Saluda man was killed Sunday when his pickup was broadsided by another pickup on U.S. 17 in Gloucester County. The man, Joseph F. Stephenson, 80, of the 4000 block of Buena Vista Road, died upon impact. Stephenson was driving a 1988 Chevrolet S-10 northbound on George Washington Memorial High-way (U.S. 17), when Jerry C. Rich, 70, of Glenns, who was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, attempted to cross U.S. 17 from the median crossover and struck the Stephenson truck, reported Sgt. Michelle Anaya, public information officer for the Virginia State Police. The crash, which occurred at approximately 1:22 p.m., happened at Woods Cross Road (Route 610), in the area of Petsworth Elementary School.
Rich was charged with failing to yield right of way.
Neither alcohol nor speed were contributing factors in the crash, Sgt. Anaya said.
