Ann Kimbrough Lawman

Ann Kimbrough Lawman, 92, of Richmond, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 19, 2022.

Ann was born to Agnes and Louis Wellford in 1929 in Roanoke, growing up among an extended family whose memories and descendants comfort her family today. Ann married Lud Kimbrough Jr. in 1951 and had three children, Gordon (deceased), Lud Kimbrough III and Ann Langhorne Kimbrough. She remarried to Matthew Lawman in 1983, sharing her love of family with Matt’s daughters Dawn, Pat and Debbie, and embarking on numerous retiree adventures together.

Always active and effervescent in love of friends and enthusiasm for life, Ann served others singing in choirs, volunteering at church and brightening the day of total strangers with her kindness and vitality. She loved her family and friends beyond measure and was forever grateful for the joy they brought into her life. Ann loved the grace and elegance of figure skating, being on saltwater boating and fishing, helping on sailboat race committees at Fishing Bay and continued to snow ski well into her retirement years. Having taken up painting in the 1970s, Ann captured her zest for life in dozens of works that convey the beauty she saw in every moment, and those paintings continue to brighten the day of observers just as Ann did.

Ann is survived by her children, Lud Kimbrough III (Frances) and Ann Langhorne Kimbrough; grandchildren, Blake Kimbrough (Julia) and Miles Kimbrough; great-granddaughter, Virginia Anne Marie Kimbrough; stepdaughters, Dawn Lawman (Wayne Bishop), Pat Crigler (Billy) and Debbie Whitmore (Barry) and their many beautiful children; her best friend, GW Michael, who brought endless joy with his daily calls and visits; and the dedicated and caring staff at Westminster-Canterbury, whose devotion shall be ever cherished.

A memorial service celebrating Ann’s life is planned for 1 p.m. Friday, July 29 at the chapel of Westminster-Canterbury Richmond. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ann’s name to the Westminster Canterbury Foundation, 1600 Westbrook Ave., Richmond, VA 23227.
