Her mother, Urbanna’s Martha Heric, assisting in collection of donations
by Larry Chowning –
Dariusz Siuta, 39, of New York and his fiancée Kelly Proctor, formerly of Urbanna, will be traveling to Siuta’s home of Rzeszow, Poland, in July. They will be carrying American dollars to the Ukrainian refugees at the city’s train station.
The dollars are for the immediate needs of food or clothing. Some of the refugees are arriving with less than nothing. Siuta is distributing the U.S. dollars in smaller amounts to as many people as the funds last.
Through his efforts, the refugees will have the funds immediately instead of having to sign up to an agency, which requires time for processing and takes some of the donation to pay for agency overhead.
Rzeszow, Poland, the largest town in southeastern Poland, before heading on to Przemysl, a few miles from the Ukraine border, is one of the most heavily trafficked crossing points in Poland for refugees fleeing towns that are under attack.
Sixty to 100 refugees arrive daily by rail at Rzeszow’s train station usually heading on to Warsaw or into a more central location in Poland.
At the train station the waiting room is always full of refugees and Siuta plans to go to the station and give out as many dollars as he can collect from donations to help those move forward in their journey, he said.
Proctor’s mother, Martha Heric of Urbanna, is helping with the project and has collected funds from local civic clubs. Anyone interested in supporting the Ukrainian refugees in Rzeszow can contact Heric at 804-815-8629 or Siuta at 347-724-4601.
