School officials to take closer look at work needed at MHS

The uninviting looking entrance to the east wing of Middlesex High School is unchanged since the wing was added to the 1949 structure in the early 1960s, except maybe for the heavy rust that has formed over the years. The Middlesex County School Board (MCSB) voted on Monday, Oct. 11, to negotiate the hiring of Moseley Architects of Richmond to determine “scope of the work” needed to consider the future of Middlesex High School (MHS).

Back in August, MCSB issued a Request for Proposal (RFP), a contract to pursue professionals to create an MHS master plan for the county’s only public secondary school facility.

School and county officials have been discussing what to do with the east wing of the high school and the MHS facility in general for more than a generation. Over the last 20 years, county taxpayers have funded a new Middlesex Elementary School building and a new St. Clare Walker Middle School facility, leaving only the high school building without being a new building.

The county, however, has over the years invested a great deal of funds into major renovations at the high school, including $3.6 million in the Syd Thrift Athletic Complex.
