Town Council discussion on proposed pier continues

A proposed Town of Urbanna community pier would jut from this overgrown area above where oyster shells line the shore. This photo was taken from Latane Montague’s marina, which he plans to expand. In the background is Oyster Harbor Condominiums — some residents there oppose the pier. The proposed $50,000-plus pier on town property at the end of Virginia Street was discussed at the Aug. 26 Urbanna Town Council meeting. (Photo by Tom Chillemi)

On Aug. 26, a few hours before the Urbanna Town Council meeting, a post on the town’s Facebook page stated a kayak pier proposed for the end of Virginia Street where it meets Urbanna Creek was not on the agenda.

The post stated, “In today’s Southside Sentinel an article stated that the proposed Virginia Street dock/pier project ‘may be discussed’ at tonight’s town council meeting. While comments may be made by the public or members of town council regarding the issue, there will be no action taken by the council tonight on this matter.”

The Virginia Street kayak pier wasn’t on the agenda, but the debate continued — should the Town of Urbanna build a pier on a narrow strip of land that is less than 100 yards from the Urbanna Town Marina?

Council meetings are now available on YouTube at  Town of Urbanna YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtdkJChDmAZm5_7550ShAVQ.
