Middlesex schools seek more taxpayer funding

There were no public attendees and no comments from the public on a proposed fiscal year 2021-2022 $19,527,625 budget at a Middlesex County School Board (MCSB) budget public hearing Monday at St. Clare Walker Middle School.

The proposed budget requests a $541,822 increase in new revenues from county taxpayers to balance the budget. The proposal calls for a 2% plus a step raise for all school employees amounting to an overall 3% increase ($363,000).

Superintendent Peter Gretz explained the ongoing dilemma the school system faces with state funding. Even though Gov. Ralph Northam has recommended 2% raises for teachers, Virginia House of Delegates 5% and Virginia Senate 3%, whichever amount passes the legislature, it will not be a sizable amount…
