Town votes to accept marina plan

At the foot of Virginia Street in Urbanna is an aging marina. Owner Latane Montague of Urbanna and Alexandria said the metal boathouse there was built in 1956 by his grandfather.

Montague plans to rebuild the marina, including a new boathouse and 14 slips, most of them floating piers.

Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC), the main permitting agency, conducted a public comment period on Montague’s application that closed Dec. 4, 2020. However, objections by two Urbanna residents stirred debate at the Jan. 28 Urbanna Town Council meeting.

After more than 40 minutes of talk, council voted to support the marina plan.

However, council’s vote was not necessary. VMRC is the permitting agency and comments should have been directed to the state agency, pointed out Montague…
