More peacemakers needed, especially this Thanksgiving

Kevin and his brother Buzz were fighting over a slice of pizza. While they were wrestling each other, milk and soda were being spilled all over the house and the family gathering turned into an uproar. At the peak of the chaos, Uncle Frank yells to Kevin, “Look what you did you little jerk!”

That scene out of the movie “Home Alone” always struck me. Large family gatherings are almost comically expected to have some type of similar outburst. This Thanksgiving and upcoming holiday season may be different and stressful for many reasons and, to exacerbate things, there are many people divided on many issues.

One of Jesus’ most notable discourses starts in the book of Matthew, chapter 5. He talks about people who are blessed. Blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who seek righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the persecuted, and the peacemakers. (Matthew 5:3-10) Blessed are the peacemakers.

In the book of II Corinthians, the apostle Paul is writing to the church at Corinth. He tells and implores the people and the church to do something in chapter 5. He calls them to deny themselves, love others, embrace the fact that they are a new creation in Christ, and begs them to be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:14-21) Blessed are the peacemakers.

The simple answer to all of life’s struggles, problems, dilemmas, fears, conflicts, and divisions — is Jesus. It may seem impractical to talk about Jesus. It may seem like…
