Couple requests Urbanna extend town’s boundary

The area outlined above could become part of Urbanna if boundary line adjustments are approved. The gray parking area and buildings are where Urbanna Lumber was once located. The round structure in the upper left corner is the town’s water tower. The Urbanna firehouse is visible along Virginia Street in the lower right corner. The field behind the fire house could be part of the boundary adjustment, pending approval by the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department.

The Town of Urbanna could gain some land through a proposal by Barbara and John Mullins of Urbanna who are seeking to move Urbanna’s western border to make their neighboring parcels part of the town.

The Mullinses’ corporation Thurston Properties LLC owns about five acres along Urbanna’s western border that are not in the town limits. The Mullinses’ parcels include land where Urbanna Lumber was once located.

The Mullinses are seeking “boundary line adjustments” from Middlesex County. In an Oct. 21 letter to Middlesex County Administrator Matt

Walker, the Mullinses ask for the parcels to “be incorporated into the Town of Urbanna by boundary line adjustments.”

The field owned by the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) that is located behind the firehouse could be included in the boundary adjustments, contingent on MVFD board of directors approval.

Not an annexation

“This is not an annexation,” said Urbanna Town Council’s attorney, Andy Bury.

The county board of supervisors and the town council would both have to approve the boundary change for it to take effect, he explained. Both bodies would need to conduct public hearings before making a decision, said Bury. A circuit court judge would also have to approve the adjustments in order for them to take effect.

Presentation

Town representatives plan to make an initial presentation on the proposed boundary line adjustments during the board of supervisors meeting to be held electronically on Wednesday, November 4, starting at 3 p.m. Visit https://www.co.middlesex.va.us to learn how to view and participate in the meeting…
