Keeping Awareness Alive

As a follow up to a June 7 Saluda racial justice march and rally that attracted 200 people, about a dozen people participate in a similar-themed vigil Saturday morning along General Puller Highway in front of the historic Middlesex County Courthouse. The group includes, from left, Steve and Robin Mathews of Locust Hill, Michael Knez of Locust Hill, Carolyn Chamberlain of Saluda and Gary Osborn of Saluda. The participants received many honks and thumbs up gestures from passing motorists. Most said they want to keep awareness on the issue alive and plan to continue the public demonstrations in Middlesex. (Photo by Don Richeson)

Middlesex residents use vigil at courthouse to keep spotlight on racial injustice

About a dozen people in support of the “Black Lives Matter” movement waved signs and shouted encouragement for the movement during a “vigil” rally in front of the Middlesex County Historical Courthouse Building in Saluda on Saturday.

As people drove through the stoplight at the intersection in Saluda those in support blew their horns for encouragement and gave a thumbs up. The two-hour long rally was conducted to show continued support towards the movement in Middlesex County and to honor the celebration of Juneteenth. The date June 19, 1865 was first celebrated in Texas as the day slaves in that state learned they were free. It is now celebrated nationwide in most states.
