MHS girls win twice

The Middlesex Lady Chargers varsity basketball team got off to a slow start on January 10 and trailed visiting Chincoteague 12-8 after the opening period of the non-conference game.

The Lady Chargers tightened the defense and took a 7-point lead into halftime. The Lady Chargers continued pressuring the ball and pulled away in the second half and cruised to an easy 40-26 victory.

“Time is creeping up on us and we must make dramatic improvements in our effort to be successful down the stretch,” said MHS head coach Neil Wake. “We can execute but our effort is still not what it should be.”

MHS evened its record at 2-2 in Tidewater District play by defeating Charles City 57-32 on January 13. The Lady Chargers took a 20-10 first quarter lead and never looked back.

“It was a good performance” leading into the Lady Charger’s district game the following night against  undefeated King William, said Coach Wake. “We needed this performance and we hope to use it as a springboard for success heading into our stretch run.”

On Friday, January 17, the Lady Chargers will visit Chincoteague; on Tuesday, January 21, the Lady Chargers will host King and Queen; and on Friday, January 24, Middlesex will be at Mathews.

The JVs play at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity follows at 7 p.m.
