Marshall finishes sixth; qualifies for state cross-country meet

The Middlesex High School (MHS) boys cross-country team had one runner to qualify for this Saturday’s State Group 1A meet as Ethan Marshall finished sixth overall at the Region A meet on Wednesday, November 6, on the Eastern State Hospital course in Williamsburg. Marshall ran the 5K course in 18:44.35 to earn All-Region honors.

Mathews Cameron Steams won the Region A race with a blazing time of 16:51.82. Blue Devil Josh Rosadino was second (18:12.46); Northumberland’s Zach Moore, third (18:26.04); Lancaster’s De’Avion Harding, fourth (18:38.36); and West Point’s Andrew Choate, fifth (18:39.59).

Middlesex finished fifth in team competition with 116 points. Mathews won the meet with 29 points; Lancaster, second, 76 points; West Point, third, 94 points; Washington & Lee, fourth, 103 points; Northumberland, sixth, 139 points; Northampton, seventh, 166; Chincoteague, eighth, 215; and Essex, ninth, 220 points.

Charger Wyatt Evans (20:01.94) just missed qualifying for the state meet. The MHS sophomore finished 15th to earn All-Region honors. Members of the top three teams go to state along with the top five individuals not on a top-three team. Evans finished sixth among those individuals.

Other Chargers to run in the Region A meet were Ryan Mahr, 27th (21:14.76); Sterling Wingfield, 35th (21:44.94); Vicente Reyes, 40th (22:00.37); Nathan Campbell, 42nd (22:12.98); and Eric Graulich, 57th (24:20.93).

The State Group 1A cross-country meet will be held at Green Hill Park in Roanoke on Saturday, November 16. The boys race starts at 12:30 p.m.
