Planning under way for Blue Water Trail

Time will erase buildings, but it cannot take away memories captured of those places.

Urbanna historian and author Larry Chowning has collected memories of places lost to time along Urbanna Creek. He has written down some of those memories as the start of a “Blue Water Trail” that will preserve history of Urbanna Creek for generations.

The idea is similar to Urbanna’s Museum In The Streets, or “MITS,” where signs give a brief history of each stop.

The difference is Blue Water Trail will be on the water — giving kayakers and boaters destinations. The trails could be part of The Virginia Tourism Council program which fosters eco-tourism. Mathews County has 100-plus miles of Blue Water Trails.

Chowning, a member of the Urbanna Town Council, and the town council are partnering with the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission to develop the trails. The Commission will build a water trail website…
