In split vote, MC supervisors vote to remove monument Public hearing still needed before removal occurs

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) voted 3-2 to remove the granite Confederate monument in the southwest corner of the courthouse green at the Historic Middlesex County Courthouse at a board meeting on Tuesday, July 6.

Hartfield representative John Koontz made the motion to remove the Confederate statue, while Harmony Village representative Reggie Williams and Saluda District supervisor Pete Mansfield voted in favor too. Jamaica District Supervisor Wayne Jessie and Pinetop District Supervisor Lud Kimbrough voted against.

Before any action can be taken, the General Assembly requires that a public hearing be conducted. The hearing has been scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 7. After the public hearing, supervisors are required by Virginia Code to take a second vote and must allow 30 days to find a home for the monument before….
