Chargers dominate scrimmage, win five of seven sets
by Don Richeson –
Middlesex High School’s girls tennis team is surging at the start of the season, winning five of its seven singles sets during a special April 26 home scrimmage versus Mathews.
St. Clare Walker Middle School Technology Education Teacher Matthew Short, who is nearing a decade serving as head coach of the Charger girls tennis team, notes the 2020-2021 squad boasts a lot of young talent and has many things going for it. “Our greatest strength is our players themselves,” he said, adding their can-do spirit will take the team places, despite lingering challenges from the pandemic. “Everyone has a reason why it’s a challenging year in school and sports, but these student athletes are still here doing their part,” he said.
The Charger girls didn’t play last season due to the pandemic. MHS girls tennis finished 3-7 during the 2018-2019 school year.
