Urbanna Oyster Festival poster features ‘Oyster Cans of the Past’

“Oyster Cans of the Past” by Jeannie W. Duke is the official 2013 Urbanna Oyster Festival poster.

Duke, who is principal of Middlesex High School, has lived in Middlesex most of her life. She loves to spend time on the water with family and friends and is always inspired by its beauty.

Duke said part of the inspiration for her poster photo came from her interests in seeing the contrast between the old ways of doing things versus the new. So, when a friend mentioned her oyster can collection, Duke got the idea to photograph them with the Rappahannock River as the background.

“Each can is so unique and tells its own story,” Duke said. “I love photographing them and I’m really proud of this picture and hope people will enjoy the print this year.”

The print will be on sale for $15 at the Oyster Festival information RV on the corner of Virginia Street and Rappahannock Avenue near EVB bank during the festival this Friday and Saturday, November 1-2.
