Festival Queen contestant raises funds for MHS music program

Little Miss Spat contestant Kayleigh Pullman and Urbanna Oyster Festival Queen contestant Emily Sheppard.

As their community service project this summer, Urbanna Oyster Festival Queen contestant Emily Sheppard and her Little Miss Spat contestant Kayleigh Pullman raised money for the Middlesex High School (MHS) music program. The money will be used for copious instruments, instrument repairs, music, and for other miscellaneous items for the band. The pair plan on running more fundraisers and are excited to help.

Over the summer, Sheppard ran a week-long music camp at Lower United Methodist Church that Kayleigh attended. During camp, the kids were taught music notes, counts, and tempos. They also were introduced to new instruments and new music. The attendees made their own note trees and drums to take home and play. Sheppard and her good friend, John Williams, also taught a class at the Middlesex Family YMCA, where the children made drums and learned songs to play with them.

Sheppard, 17, the daughter of Drew and Ann Sheppard of Deltaville, is an ambitious senior at MHS. She has a 3.8 GPA and is taking all honor and AP classes. She has auditioned and has been accepted into both district band and chorus, two very fine accomplishments for a high school musician. She also has attended a band camp and honor band at Virginia Tech and James Madison University. She plans to attend James Madison University and major in music.

Kayleigh is the daughter of Tony and Starr Pullman of Wake. Kayleigh, 6, is a first-grader at Middlesex Elementary School.

Her favorite colors are pink, purple, and baby blue. She enjoys reading, music class and ballet, and wants to be a teacher when she grows up.
