York & Grafton win MHS Holiday B-Ball Tournament

Both the Middlesex High School boys and girls finished second in the MHS Holiday Basketball Tournament on December 28-29 in the John S. Clements Memorial Gym in Saluda.
The Middlesex boys downed Northampton 55-50 in the semifinals on Monday as freshman forward Ryheem Lockley scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. In the other semifinal game, York ripped Grafton 49-28.
In Tuesday’s title game, Group AA York jumped to a 30-7 halftime lead behind an aggressive zone defense and coasted to a 63-43 win over the Chargers. Lockley had 12 points and 12 rebounds to pace MHS.
In the boys third place game, Grafton whipped Northampton 58-30.
In the girls tournament, the Lady Chargers defeated Northampton 46-38 in the semifinals on Monday as MHS senior center Micah Reed scored 15 of her team-high 20 points in the second half. In the other semifinal, Grafton downed Tabb 58-47.
In Tuesday’s title game, the Lady Chargers stayed close to Group AA Grafton in the first half and trailed 18-14 at intermission. In the third quarter, however, Grafton, wore down MHS with its full-court press and went on a 22-2 run over a 5-minute span and won easily, 66-30.
In the girls third place game, Tabb routed Northampton 57-33.
The Lady Chargers return to action on Tuesday, January 5, at Rappahannock, and will host King William on Thursday, January 7, in their Tidewater District opener.
The MHS boys will host Rappahannock on Tuesday, January 5, at MHS, and will visit King William on Friday, January 8, in their district opener.
JV games begin at 6 p.m. and varsity games follow at 7:30 p.m.
