Members of the 2014 Middlesex YMCA’s 12-15 team include, from left, Hunter Collier, coach Neal Barber, Mathew Wilson, Kyle Smith, Anthony Pullman, Holden White, Shawn Haskell, George Shaw, Justin Newman, Kenneth Beam, Sarah Blake, Maddy Polson, Ben Hunt, Brian Graulich and Alex Bullock.

The Middlesex YMCA hosted a 12-15 year old double-elimination tournament on Saturday, April 12. Teams from Mathews County, New Kent County, West Point and the Northern Neck joined Middlesex and coach Neal Barber in the tournament.

After a long day and some teams playing up to five games, the tournament came down to Middlesex and the Northern Neck in the championship game. Both teams played their hearts out. With the kids being near exhaustion, the game went into overtime. The score was still tied after overtime and a penalty kick shoot-out ensued. Each team chose five players to take the kicks and the team with the most goals scored would win the game. Middlesex showed that they were on its game, scoring three goals to the Northern Neck’s one. Justin Newman showed a very strong presence as the goalie, blocking shots that amazed both teams.

Middlesex came out on top of the Northern Neck in the game, but because it was the Northern Neck Y’s first loss, the two teams had to play another game to decide the championship. In the last game, with everyone exhausted, the Northern Neck Y prevailed and took the trophy across the river.

Special thanks to everyone who helped make the tournament possible, especially to Matt Schaefer and his players from Christchurch School who refereed the day’s games.
