YMCA offers karate

A participant in the Mike Smallwood Invitational Karate Tournament, hosted by the Middlesex Family YMCA, performs a routine with a Gatka.

The Middlesex Family Y is continuing to offer karate instruction two nights a week, Monday and Thursday, in the program center at the Y in Hartfield.

Mike Smallwood, the YMCA’s Sensei, is a nine-year veteran and a third-degree black belt in the area of martial arts. Smallwood was taught by Shihan Varian Beverly, who practices out of Tappahannock.

Through Smallwood’s own martial arts and mixed martial curriculum, students learn Judo, Brazilian Jiujitsu and kickboxing techniques. He uses a 10-belt system that ensures the newest and top quality of standards known in martial arts in today’s world.

Tournaments will be included in the Y karate program and will be held at the Middlesex Family Y in the spring.

All who are interested in taking karate classes are urged to contact the Y program director at 776-0005.
