Y teaches safety and confidence in the water

Middlesex Elementary 2nd-graders flex their muscles after completing the YMCA “Learn to Swim” program.

The Middlesex Family YMCA gave 80 second-graders from Middlesex Elementary School (MES) swim lessons for two weeks through a program called “Learn to Swim.” The children were taught  safety skills and learned respect and security around the water.

“We believe this is a necessity in this area with so much water surrounding us, and drowning is the second leading cause of death for children under the age of 14 in our country,” said Cheryl Holleran, one of the YMCA instructors and coordinator of the lessons. “We received a grant from the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA Heritage Club that enabled us to give the lessons to the second-graders free of charge.
