Wood, Wiggins homer to lift Deltas

Seven weeks ago Tyler Wood’s college baseball season came to an end when he broke his collarbone in a game playing for Lynchburg College. After a successful surgery and doctors clearance to play baseball again, Wood returned to the baseball field for the Deltaville Deltas.

He made his return in style.

Wood drove in 6 runs, including a 5th inning grand slam home run, as the Deltas overpowered the Richmond Mets 12-1 on Monday night in Varina.

Wood’s slam capped a 6-run Deltas inning, but the offensive onslaught had begun early on in the game. Ryan Wiggins drove the fourth pitch of the game deep down the left field line, a high-arcing fly ball that stayed just inside the foul pole to give Deltaville an early 1-0 lead. The Deltas
plated two more runs in the opening frame, and tacked on another in the 2nd inning when Wiggins singled home Wood for a 4-0 lead.

After being held scoreless in the 3rd inning, Deltaville extended their lead to 6-0 in the 4th when, once again, Wood blasted a 2-run double to score Scott Crump and Alex Fitchett. The Deltas sealed the win in the 5th, doubling their score and building an insurmountable lead.

Meanwhile on the mound, pitcher Paul Jones made sure there was no hope of a comeback. Jones scattered just 3 hits while striking out 7 batters over 5 innings of scoreless work. Jay Moore and Teddy Herbert split the relief pitching duties to seal the win. The Mets’ only run came in the 7th, but it was far too little, too late.

Leading the offense with Wood and Wiggins were Travis Crump, who went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, and Holden Sandridge, who also collected a multi-hit game.

Deltaville’s Saturday night home game against the York Cannons was postponed due to rain. A makeup date has not yet been determined.

The Deltas return home this Saturday, June 9, as they host the newly-formed Richmond Team Woody. The woodpecker-themed squad has, like the Deltas, won both of their opening games of the young season. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
