‘Women Only’ pistol class set for Nov. 3

Barbara Wallace (above) decided to learn more about self-defense after her home was broken into. Now she teaches others.

The Middlesex Sportsman’s Hunt Club in Hartfield is pleased to offer a handgun training program just for women. This “Women Only, First Level” pistol course will be held on Saturday, November 3, at the Middlesex Sportsman’s Hunt Club (MSHC) range in Hartfield.

Today more and more women are deciding to take responsibility for their own safety and are learning how to protect themselves and their loved ones with a firearm. The “First Steps” course was developed as a safe, comfortable environment in which to pass along safe firearms handling and self-defense handgun skills to women.

One of the instructors, Barbara Wallace, said, “Someone tried to break into home while I was there. I had a gun in the house but wasn’t sure of what I should do or what my legal rights were. I didn’t feel like I really knew how to handle the gun right. I was scared and it took the police 45 minutes to arrive. This ‘First Steps’ class was great for me because it taught me what to do and how to do it and gave me the confidence to handle a situation like that again. I now have a concealed handgun permit because it gives me the legal right to carry a gun to defend myself anywhere I go. I liked the class so much I became an instructor and I love to help other women learn how to shoot.”

The class begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Most of the instruction is indoors and the last two hours are conducted at the range on the firing line. The lead instructor is Macey White, who has over 30 years experience and is a two-time state champion, a two-time national record-setting pistol shooter and an NRA instructor and instructor trainer. Assisting White will be Wallace.

The cost is $50 per person or $75 for mother-daughter or sister-sister pairs to cover the cost of training materials. This course meets and exceeds all of the firearm training requirements required to receive a Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit.

Women may bring their own firearms or may borrow one from the club. Women who bring their own guns should transport them unloaded, in a container, in the trunk of their car with a box of ammunition in a separate container.

The class will cover safe handling, operation, marksmanship, storage, transportation and state and federal firearms laws and more. If you would like to attend, registration is required. Contact White at 776-9861 or for more information or to register for the class.
