The Middlesex varsity volleyball team is off to a 3-0 start to the season with wins against Rappahannock, W&L and Essex in non-district action.

On August 26, the Lady Chargers shut down visiting Washington & Lee in three games 25-5, 25-7 and 25-22. “Everyone contributed to a great win,” said MHS coach Jennifer Harrow. “We maintained our level of play.”

Harrow said Chelsi Blake had a great serving streak in the first game with 11 points, many of which were aces, and Raquel Pierce did a great job playing defense.

For Middlesex, Kelsey Hainley had 4 kills, 11 assists and 2 aces; Jillien Puster, 3 kills, 4 assists; Raquel Pierce, 3 kills, 1 assist; Chelsi Blake, 4 kills, 12 aces; Hayley Guess,1 kill, 4 aces; Joey Stinchcomb, 3 kills; Chelsea Lewter, 2 aces; Ashley Williams, 2 kills, 1 ace; Megan Payne, 1 kill; Jessica Dixon, 1 kill, 5 assists; Bridgette Self, 1 assist, 2 aces; and Brittin Payne, 1 kill, 2 aces.

Middlesex started its season on August 24 by defeating Essex 25-11, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19.

Middlesex was not up to par for the season opener, said Harrow. “We seemed to be playing down to the level of Essex at times versus playing our best. I did work to get everyone into the game, but you can tell a difference in play when a new person is added to the lineup. As a team, you tend to learn and depend on the person that is beside you, and when someone else is there you become a little timid as what to expect from them.”

Chelsi Blake and Jillien Puster had a great hitting night. Hayley Guess served well with 5 aces and Chelsea Lewter took command of the defense.

For the Lady Chargers, Kelsey Hainley had 4 kills, 11 assists and 2 aces; Jillien Puster, 3 kills, 4 assists; Raquel Pierce, 3 kills, 1 assist; Chelsi Blake, 4 kills, 12 aces; Hayley Guess,1 kill, 4 aces; Joey Stinchcomb, 3 kills; Chelsea Lewter, 2 aces; Ashley Williams, 2 kills, 1 ace; Megan Payne, 1 kill; Jessica Dixon, 1 kill, 5 assists; Bridgette Self, 1 assist, 2 aces; and Brittin Payne, 1 kill, 2 aces.

The Middlesex varsity and JV volleyball teams will host Lancaster on Tuesday, September 7, and are at W&L on Thursday, September 9. JV games are a 6 p.m. and the varsity plays at 7:30 p.m.
