The Middlesex High golf team traveled to West Point Country Club last Thursday and defeated West Point 194-230 to improve its Tidewater District mark to 5-0 and overall record to 7-4.
Leading the way for the Chargers was sophomore Harley Moore with a 44. “Harley did what he had to do to handle the conditions of the course and he shot the lowest round for that reason,” said MHS coach Greg Harrow.
Alexander Crittenden followed with a 48 while Drew Pitts and Jake Fletcher followed with a 50 and 52, respectively. Others competing in the match were Robbie Pitts (56) and Gino Deserio (63).
“Our scores were high today, but for good reason,” noted Harrow. “West Point’s course got burnt from having little water earlier in the summer and it was in rough shape. The fairways were thin in lots of places and it caused us to play an entirely different game than we were accustomed. Regardless of the scores, I felt like we did what we needed to do to get the win and now we can concentrate on the last week of the season and prepare hard for the district tournament.”
The tournament begins at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 22, at Piankatank River Golf Club.
The Chargers hosted their last regular season district match on Tuesday against King William and play the Rappahannock Raiders of the Northern Neck District today, September 18, at 4 p.m.
