Turnovers doom MHS in opener

The Middlesex Chargers opened their 2013-14 varsity basketball season on Monday with a 71-47 loss at Surry.

With football season extending an extra week this season, MHS first-year head coach Jason Williams and assistant coach Jon Hatch had only a couple of weeks to prepare the basketball team for its season opener.
The rust showed as the Chargers committed 35 turnovers in the loss.

Sophomore guard Marques Holmes led MHS with 16 points, senior guard Brett Carter had 15 and junior forward/guard Jacob Self added 13. The other two starters were junior forwards Chris Blake and DeAngelo King.
Senior guard Brandon Sjolie added 2 points and senior forward Kaleb Wake had 1.

Other players on the team include senior Gregory Robinson, juniors Zebulon Burrell, Brad Gills and Mister Morning, and sophomore Shakeim Paige.

The Chargers visit Northumberland at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 9, and visit Appomattox Regional Governor’s School on Wednesday, December 11, for an 8 p.m. game.
