The Deltaville Deltas had some offensive fireworks of their own in capturing a pair of victories last weekend—twice putting up 14 runs against the VBA 61’s.

The Deltas defeated the 61’s by scores of 14-4 and 14-1, improving their record to 11-5 in Southern Virginia Baseball League (SVBL) play, and 12-6 overall.

This weekend, Deltaville hosts the Hampton Braves on Friday, July 13, at 7:30 p.m. on Rudy’s Pizza Night.

On Saturday, July 14, the Southern Virginia Baseball League All-Star Game and Home Run Derby will be held at Deltaville Ballpark. The league’s top sluggers will blast off at 4 p.m., with the All-Stars facing off at 7 p.m.

Travis Crump blasted a pair of home runs, including a 6th-inning grand slam, as the Deltas downed the 61’s, 14-4.

After the 61’s took an early 1-0 lead, T. Crump drove in the first of his 6 RBIs for the Deltas on a 2nd-inning RBI double to tie the game at 1-1.

The Deltaville offense took advantage of erratic pitching in the 3rd inning, taking a 2-1 lead before loading the bases for Chris King, the Deltas’ 2011 home run leader. King blasted a grand slam to break the game open.

Not to be outdone, T. Crump followed with a solo shot of his own to extend the advantage to 7-1.

The 61’s closed the gap to 7-4 until the 6th inning when Deltaville went on another scoring rampage. Once again the Deltas scored a run and then loaded the bases, but this time it was T. Crump blasting the second grand slam of the night for the Deltas.

T. Crump finished 3-for-3 at the plate, leading all hitters with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. King was 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs, and Alexander Crittenden also had a 2-for-3 night and scored a pair of runs. Scott Crump also added 3 runs and 2 RBIs on a 1-for-2 night while drawing a pair of walks.

Jay Moore earned his 4th win in as many starts for the Deltas, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) over 6 innings. Robert Shermer pitched a scoreless 7th in relief.

Deltas 14, 61’s 1
On Sunday in Yorktown, Deltaville’s offense took a quick 2-0 lead, and that’s all pitcher Smiley Smith needed. Smith pitched 5 shutout innings, allowing only one baserunner past 1st base en route to his 2nd win of the season.

The Deltas gave Smith a whole lot more help, however. Deltaville extended the lead to 4-0 in the 5th, then plated 7 runs in the 6th and 3 more in the 7th to tally 14 runs for the second consecutive game.

Catcher Ryan Reynolds was highly effective at the plate, scoring 4 times on 2-for-2 hitting. Luke Kirk also had a 2-for-4 day, and 8 other hitters contributed hits to the offensive onslaught.

Smith scattered 4 hits over his 5 innings, and did not walk a batter. Zach Jones allowed a run in 2 innings of relief work on the mound.
