Surry edges MHS girls in regional tourney

The Middlesex High girls basketball team lost 48-20 to Mathews in the Tidewater District Tournament championship game on Friday at King William, and lost its quarterfinal Region A Division I tournament game 34-33 to Surry on Tuesday at MHS.
In other Region A Division I tournament action on Tuesday, Charles City downed Rappahannock 51-35 and Colonial Beach ripped West Point 46-12.
In Division II regional action, Mathews edged Essex 58-56.
The Lady Chargers opened the Tidewater District Tournament on Wednesday, February 13, with a wire-to-wire 51-33 win over West Point. The win put the MHS girls in the championship game for the second straight year.
On Friday, February 15, Middlesex traveled to King William for a rematch of last year’s district final against regular season champion Mathews. The Lady Blue Devils quickly put to rest the Lady Chargers’ hope of repeating as district tournament champ. Mathews led 20-4 at the half and cruised to a 48-20 win.
