The Middlesex High girls varsity basketball team led early, but Surry led when it counted and went home with a 49-45 win on Monday in the season opener at MHS in Saluda.
“This was a great back-and-forth game for us,” said Lady Charger head coach Neil Wake. “It was the first game of the season and there was a lot of fireworks.”
The two teams battled to a 36-36 tie after three quarters. Surry went on a tear early in the third quarter, holding Middlesex scoreless until halfway through the period.
“The fourth quarter was when this version of the Lady Chargers showed they will be a force this season,” said Wake. “My girls crawled out of a 10-point hole to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.”
Middlesex made just 16 of 45 free throw attempts. “We must fix that to get over the hump,” said Wake.
Leading Middlesex were Tambria Wake with 12 points and 16 rebounds; Brittin Payne with 12 points and 12 rebounds; Avis Keeling with 10 points and 5 assists; Monica Ward had 3 points and 3 assists; Zinnie Reed and Olivia Major each hit for 3 points; Grace Rutkowski and Ali Bibee each made a free throw.
The Middlesex girls basketball teams will host Northumberland on Monday, December 9, with the JVs playing at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
The girls varsity team will visit Appomattox Regional Governor’s School on Wednesday, December 11, at 6 p.m. The varsity boys will follow at 8 p.m.
