The Middlesex High School boys track team finished fourth as a team with 45 points at the Virginia 1A state track meet on Friday and Saturday, June 1-2, at East Rockingham High School in Elkton.

The Chargers were paced by seniors Demetre South, Raquan Marshall and Manny Fernandez. South was high scorer for MHS with 14 points. Marshall had 13 and Fernandez added 11.25.

South finished third in the 110-meter high hurdles (16); fifth, 300 intermediate hurdles (41.68); and fifth, triple jump (41’10.25”).

Marshall finished second in the triple jump (45’) and fourth, long jump (21’4.5”).

One of the most exciting races of the day was the 300-meter intermediate hurdles as defending state outdoor champion Manny Fernandez squared off against number one seed Muhammad Fulani of Cumberland High School. In pouring rain, Middlesex Demetre South actually led the race until the last hurdle when he hit it and fell back into fifth place. Fernandez and Fulani were left side-by-side and finished the race with identical times (40.7). However, an instant replay camera showed Fulani’s body just barely ahead of Fernandez to defeat one of the greatest Charger hurdlers in MHS history.

Fernandez also finished fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.47) and ran a leg of the 4x800 meter relay team that finished fourth (8:48.22). Stefan Coleman, Carlos Marshall and Clayton Ellis also were members of the relay team.
