The Middlesex High School Chargers wrestling team finished second in the Conference 42 Tournament on February 5 in the Middlesex High School gym. Mathews won the championship with 33 points, the Chargers were a close second with 31 points, and King and Queen was third in the three-team event with 11 points.

Individual conference champions were Enrique Gonzales in the 113-pound weight class; Elijah Fomin in the 120-pound class; Hamza Ali, 126-pound class; Devante Robertson, 145-pound class; Chad Page, 160-pound class; and James Williams, 170-pound class.

MHS wrestlers placing second were Simon Urban, 132-pound class; Ridge Ellis, 138-pound class; Alek Fomin, 182-pound class; Stephen Skelton, 220-pound class; and Brian Hollingshead, 285-pound class.

The losses to Mathews wrestlers by Urban and Ellis were only the second defeats each of the season for the two Middlesex stars.

Three of the Middlesex-Mathews matches went into overtime and the Blue Devils won all three by decision.

“Our MHS grapplers did a great job taking six first place finishes,” said Charger coach Joel Anderson. “We put up a solid effort against Mathews.”

“Next week we will go to Perry McCluer to wrestle in our new regional tournament. We have a lot more work to do and I’m very excited to see how these young men do in the tournament,” Anderson said.

“Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. George Ellis and Kathy Page for setting up the hospitality room for the conference tournament, and our Middlesex youth wrestling parents and kids for running a great concession stand.”

“We had a tremendous community turnout to come and support us, and it was great to see some MHS wrestling alumni there to support us as well,” said Anderson.

The Chargers will compete in the Region A meet this Friday and Saturday, February 14-15, at Perry McCluer High School in Buena Vista.
