Second half rally sends Poquoson past MHS girls

The Middlesex High School girls soccer team’s most successful season in its four years of existence came to an end with a 6-1 loss to Poquoson in the semifinals of the Region 2A Tournament on May 30.

The Lady Chargers were 14-3-1 this year under coach Eric Smith, who founded and developed the girls soccer program at MHS.

“The loss was tough, especially on the seniors,” said Coach Smith. “I just reminded them of what we had accomplished the last four years and how far we had come in this sport for Middlesex High School. Nothing could take that from us and as a group of young ladies that came together as a team and family, we were winners.”

That was only part of the lesson Coach Smith wanted to share with the team. “I wanted them to understand they needed to take what they learned from this team into their future. No matter what happens, you can always overcome and be successful,” he said.

Most of the Lady Charger seniors had been a part of this team from its start in 2015. “I will truly miss them. I wish them all the best of luck in their future endeavors and they will always have a special place in my heart,” said Coach Smith.
