Freshman standout Grace Sarver of Bland High School defeated Jessica Anderson of Middlesex High 6-3, 6-2 Thursday in the semifinals of the State Group A Singles Tennis Tournament at Radford University.
Sarver went on to defeat Michelle Repper of George Mason 6-1, 7-5 in the championship match.
Both Sarver and Anderson entered the match undefeated in singles play this year.
“She (Sarver) had a personal coach with her and probably has had a tennis racket in her hand since she was one year old,” said MHS coach Pete Shepherd. “Jessica could have played better and, on another day, could have beat her.”
Sarver is coached by her sister who was a tennis star at Bland High School 10 years ago.
Anderson is the first Lady Charger in school history to win a regional singles title and play in the State Group A Singles Tournament.
The Lady Chargers was scheduled to play Wilson Memorial at 9 a.m. Friday, June 5, in the semifinals of the team competition.
After the team match, the Middlesex duo of Anderson and Melissa Baitrusaitis will play in the semifinals of the doubles tournament.
Shepherd noted it was raining in Radford on Friday and was uncertain if the weather would impact the schedule.
