Relay For Life returns to Middlesex July 24

The new Relay For Life of Middlesex is scheduled for Saturday, July 24, at Grey’s Point Campground in Topping. The event was previously scheduled for May 15 at Middlesex High School.

The event’s organizers changed the date to allow Relay teams and volunteers additional time to raise funds and build the volunteer planning committee.

A kick-off meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, at Friendship Baptist Church at Hartfield. All are invited.

Cancer survivors or family members of cancer survivors are asked to call Sharon Darnell at 804-824-3092 or go to http://www.relayforlife.org/Middlesex to register.

A fundraiser, Little Caesars pizza sales, will be held from may 20 through June 20 with a delivery date of July 6 to Friendship Baptist Church. Contact Darnell, team captain of the Peace, Love & Happiness Team, or any team member to order pizza.

The last Relay For Life event in Middlesex County was in 2005. “It’s very exciting to have a Relay For Life event back in Middlesex,” said Celeste Curtis, a local breast cancer survivor.

The Great Valu family of grocery stores, with locations at Urbanna Market and Deltaville Market, will be selling relay-themed recycled bags in support of Relay For Life during the month of May.

“Relay For Life gives Middlesex a unique opportunity to contribute to the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives, by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back,” said Curtis. “Residents who give their time, energy and financial commitment to this exciting event are really standing up for our community and its pledge to join the fight.”

Relay For Life events are held in communities across the nation in spring and summer. Individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during the Relay.

The Relay celebrates people who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and provides participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease—all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
