Registration is strong for Reedville Fishing Derby

Russ Bertino, tournament director for Smith Point Sea Rescue, announced last week that registration for the 26th Annual Reedville Fishing Derby on June 12-13 has picked up significantly.

Anglers may register up to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 11.

Bertino also announced that the “Ray Pittman Project” will be entertaining Friday, June 12, from 8 p.m. to midnight and “Casper” will play Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight. The entertainment along with various food and craft vendors all take place at Buzzard’s Point Marina in Reedville.

The derby pays out over $32,000 in cash prizes for catching three species of fish local to the area—striped bass, bluefish and croaker. This year additional skill categories add possibilities for fisherman to win cash awards. There are also prize categories for both female and youth anglers as well.

In past years, over 3,000 people have visited the derby grounds to enjoy not only the spectacle of large fish being weighed, but also to enjoy the many vendors and food purveyors who participate. This year, plans are being undertaken to provide more activities for younger family members.

Smith Point Sea Rescue is totally a volunteer rescue unit which serves boaters from Ragged Point to the mouth of the Potomac River, south to the Rappahannock River and across to the Eastern Shore.
