The Middlesex Lady Chargers defeated a scrappy Northumberland team 3-2 on Tuesday to open their softball season.

Megan Payne pitched a one-hitter in her varsity debut. She struck out 9, walked 5 and gave up only one earned run.

At the plate, Payne doubled in a run and scored.

Whitney Walton reached twice on drag bunts and scored once.

Ashley Williams drove in two runs with a double.

Raquel Pierce played well in her first game as catcher. She was one for three at the plate and scored.

The Lady Charger infield played steady “Four D” defense with Maggie Hall at third base, Amanda Brown at shortstop, Chelsea Lewter at second base and Danielle Montgomery at first base.

“Overall, the team’s never give-up attitude kept them focused throughout the game,” said MHS coach Wade Traynham, now in his 10th year at the helm.

MHS is at Rappahannock today, March 26, and will host Lancaster on Friday in a make-up game. Both games are at 5 p.m.

Next week the Lady Chargers travel to Lancaster on Thursday, April 2.
